NXT General Manager William Regal wasted no time in kicking 2016 off the right way. After thanking the NXT Universe for their incredible support in 2015 and reiterating that Bayley’s next challenger would be determined in the evening’s main event, Regal welcomed Sami Zayn back to the Full Sail Arena for the first time since his injury.

Tensions are high in NXT, to say the least. With their NXT Championship No. 1 Contender’s Triple Threat Match just one week away, Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe and Baron Corbin were all in action, tuning up for their biggest match of 2016 so far. Plus, NXT Women’s Champion Bayley joined forces with the No. 1 Contender to her title, her best friend Carmella, to take on two women furious that The Princess of Staten Island won last week’s Battle Royal, Alexa Bliss and Emma.

With Sami Zayn, Samoa Joe and Baron Corbin all staking claims to the next NXT Championship Match, the NXT Universe was excited to finally answer the question of who the next No. 1 contender would be after tonight’s main event. However, the controversial conclusion of the Triple Threat Match only caused more questions to be asked as Finn Bálor waits in the wings, ready to defend his title.

After the controversial ending to last week’s NXT Championship No. 1 Contender’s Triple Threat Match, NXT General Manager William Regal made a ruling that sent shockwaves through NXT. Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe will square off, with a future championship showdown with Finn Bálor hanging in the balance, a decision that left Baron Corbin furious. Meanwhile, the NXT Champion found himself facing another tough test in non-title action against Apollo Crews, who was looking to prove himself as worthy.

NXT made its debut at the CFE Arena on the campus of the University of Central Florida with a huge main event featuring best friends Carmella and NXT Women’s Champion Bayley clashing for the title. Heading into this week’s show, the NXT Universe was looking for the answer to one question – Who is the No. 1 Contender to the NXT Championship? However, after a hard-fought battle between Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe, there were more questions left to be asked as controversy left Finn Bálor without a top challenger once again.

NXT General Manager William Regal had an action-packed Wednesday night planned for the NXT Universe. Fans were treated to exactly that, but not quite in the way Regal had planned. What was scheduled to be a show featuring American Alpha, The Vaudevillains, NXT Women’s Champion Bayley, Asuka and more was instead taken over by a single match – the 2-out-of-3 Falls war between Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe to determine the No.1 Contender to Finn Bálor’s NXT Championship.

Meanwhile, Asuka looked to continue along the path of destruction that led her to a showdown with NXT Women’s Champion Bayley in Dallas, taking on Emma in the main event.

The rest of the roster is scrambling for the right to challenge for the titles, but as NXT becomes the place to be in sports-entertainment, the NXT Superstars are finding themselves competing with new challengers from outside the ranks of WWE.

Finn Bálor made his long-awaited return to NXT this week, his first appearance since Samoa Joe ended his 292-day reign as NXT Champion. The Demon didn’t mince words, saying that all of his matches with the submission specialist could have gone either way. But before he could elaborate, his opponent in the main event, Elias Samson, interrupted Bálor with a song mocking the former champion. Bálor put an end to the impromptu concert, silencing The Drifter with a Pele Kick ahead of their battle.

As the NXT Universe was still reeling from the major announcement that Samoa Joe and Finn Bálor’s huge NXT Championship Match at TakeOver would be contested inside a steel cage, they were surprised for a second time this week, as two of NXT’s newest stars joined forces for a big tag team encounter!

After the brutal ending to last week’s match between Bayley and Nia Jax, NXT General Manager William Regal revealed that Bayley was not cleared to compete and would not be cleared in time to get her rematch against NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at TakeOver on June 8. Though Bayley will get her opportunity down the line, Regal announced that Nia Jax, Carmella and Alexa Bliss would square off in the evening’s main event to determine Asuka’s challenger in two weeks.

Tensions were running high in NXT, with TakeOver: The End… just one week away. Everyone was on edge, including NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival. Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder declared that they were going to take back their titles from American Alpha. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa disagreed, saying that not only can’t The Revival beat Jason Jordan & Chad Gable, Dash & Dawson couldn’t beat them. The trash-talking led to a scuffle between the two teams, with Gargano & Ciampa sending the No. 1 contenders scrambling up the ramp, setting the stage for a showdown between the duos later in the evening.
