After a crushing family tragedy, Kristina and Karl Oskar decide to say goodbye to Småland for good. The journey to America will be demanding, but along the way Kristina forms deep bonds with other Swedes on the boat, including Ulrika and Judit.

The family arrives in America and during the trip to Taylor Falls in Minnesota, Kristina sees a new side of Ulrika. When Karl Oskar finally finds a place where they can settle, Kristina begins to question the life-changing decision to leave Sweden.
3. Episode 3

Last part. The family becomes part of the Swedish congregation in Minnesota. Conflict arises with Ulrika, while Kristina is told that she will not be able to cope with more pregnancies. Will she ever find a home in the new country?
