Standard Deviants School: Physics

Standard Deviants School: Physics Season 1

Season 1 Episodes

1. The Basics

January 1st, 2002

What is Physics? Find out as the Standard Deviants teach you the basics, including scientinfic notation, numbers and units, scalars and vetors.

2. Vectors & Velocity

January 8th, 2002

The Standard Deviants teach you how to multiply vectors, plus how to find the dot product and the cross product, then it's a shift over to one-dimensional kinematics, including a look at the displacement, velocity, and acceleration.

3. Kinematics

January 15th, 2002

The Standard Deviants discuss two-dimensional kinematics, motion in a plane, with a look at the role of the Big G, gravity, plays in projectile motion. Then some handy equations for figuring out projectile motion and uniform circular motion.

4. Circular Motion & Momentum

January 22nd, 2002

Things really get cranking with a discussion of accelerated circular motion. Then the Standard Deviants cover rotational motion, which the the rotation of objects like planets. Along the way you'll learn about radical radians and other science lingo. Then it's look at linear momentum and its companion, the Principle of Conservation of Linear Momentum.

5. The Three Laws of Motion

January 29th, 2002

The Standard Deviants discuss not one, not two, but three laws of motion, courtesy of Sir Isaac Newton. Afterwards, a short look at work and energy.

6. Work & Energy

February 5th, 2002

The Standard Deviants roll up their sleeves and take a look at what work means in physics. Plus "power to the people" as the go over the concept of power. You'll find out how to find an object's kinetic energy, the energy it has because of its motion. The mystery of attraction is revealed as they cover the law of universal gravitation, and the answer to a question you've always had: how much does a pizza weigh on the sun?

7. Planetary Motion & Harmonic Motion

February 12th, 2002

A quick trip into space to learn Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Next, you'll find out about simple harmonic motion, a related law called Hooke's Law, and pendulums. Bringing up the rear is an introduction to waves.

8. Heat

February 19th, 2002

Physics is hot, hot, hot! Thanks to a discussion of heat. The Standard Deviants start off with the concept of heat transfer - you'll find out how much energy it takes to raise the temperature of a substance. Next are changes of state. How much heat does it take to change ice to water, or solid silver to a gas?

9. Thermodynamics

February 26th, 2002

Thermodynamics city! The Standard Deviants start with the first law of thermodynamics. Then, naturally, the second law of thermodynamics. Next is heat engines, and application of the second law. The last topic is entropy, the measure of disorder of a system.
