1. Mysterious Mantas
In our first episode, host Jeff Corwin tracks the stealthy, awe-inspiring manta ray. Amazingly, not much is known about where they go or what they do. Georgia Aquarium is on the cutting edge of research and has developed ground-breaking satellite technology to track the manta's migratory patterns. Jeff and a team of experts race to find and tag mantas in the open water in hopes of uncovering some of the unanswered questions about this mysterious animal.
2. Great Gators
In our second episode, host Jeff Corwin ventures deep into the wetlands where there lives a predator that is both the designer and keeper of its environment. It is the great American Alligator. Join Jeff as he explores the Albino Alligator and its key characteristics at the Georgia Aquarium and then ventures out to the Everglades to observe the alligator in its natural habitat. He'll get hands-on with these amazing creatures that are a part of our national heritage.
3. A Turtle Tale
Animals are genetically designed to care for their young and generally make good parents. But sometimes, they are not destined to stay and care for their offspring, and the little ones become animal orphans. One such orphan is Murphy, a loggerhead sea turtle rescued by the Georgia Aquarium. This is the story of Murphy and his journey from rescue, to rehabilitation, and finally to release back into the wild.
4. All's Whale That Ends Whale
After diving with and feeding the Georgia Aquarium's whale sharks, host Jeff Corwin will head off to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to track migrating sharks in the wild. Along the way Jeff joins the Georgia Aquarium team as they attempt the world's first blood draw from a whale shark in the open water. Using other migrating animals for comparison, Jeff seeks to unlock the enigma of the annual travels of the world's largest fish.
5. Birds of a Feather
Many animals are at the mercy of their environments, and when a disaster occurs, these animals and their habitats can become endangered. The Brown Pelican is just one example of an animal in critical condition after catastrophic oil spills. In this episode, host Jeff Corwin will visit with a group of well-dressed penguins at the Georgia Aquarium, then journey out to the Breton National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana to study the Brown Pelican and the efforts in place to protect this precious species.
6. Reef Madness
Coral reefs are critically important to our Earth's environment as they are home to countless marine animal species and form delicate ecosystems. But they are also in critical condition. In this episode, we will dive with host Jeff Corwin as he explores coral reefs and the work being done by the Georgia Aquarium and the Coral Restoration Society to protect and preserve these important marine organisms.
7. Best of Ocean Mysteries Pt. 1
With so many amazing aquatic experiences so far, Jeff Corwin and the Georgia Aquarium team take a look back at nearly two months of exciting activities and projects.
8. Alien Invaders
Imagine what would happen if an animal is introduced to a new environment with few or no predators. This is exactly what happened with the Lionfish off the East Coast of the United States. The Lionfish was both purposely discarded into the ocean by unsatisfied pet owners and accidentally released after Hurricane Andrew destroyed an aquarium. It has flourished to the point that great measures need to be taken to keep its population at bay. Host Jeff Corwin teams up with Georgia Aquarium and NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as together they set out to capture, study, and control this invasive species.
9. Tagging Along
Even though sharks are at the top of the underwater food chain, their survival is in serious condition due to human activities. In this weekend’s episode, Jeff will work alongside the Georgia Aquarium experts to study sharks and their health. From tagging to drawing blood to performing an ultrasound, the team will work to better understand these apex predators and how conservation efforts can ensure their future.
10. Tough Jobs
Ever wondered what goes into running the largest aquarium in the world? Jeff will suit up, and along with the experts and some powerful tools, dive into the depths of the Georgia Aquarium. He will learn exactly what it takes to maintain 8.5 million gallons of water and more than 120,000 animals!
11. Go West: Otters
Sea Otters are a keystone species in that they help keep their ecosystem in balance. At one point, humans hunted sea otters almost to extinction for their fur. But now, the major threats are pathogens, parasites, and oil spills. Join host this weekend Jeff Corwin as he travels to the California Coast and works with the men and women of the Monterey Bay Aquarium to rescue stranded sea pups, place them in maternal care at the aquarium, and help them develop survival skills for their eventual release. It's a monumental effort, but all worth it, to save these loveable creatures!
12. Marine ER
If you think emergency rooms are just for humans, think again! Although it's on land, the Marine Mammal Center rescues and rehabilitates injured marine mammals from ailments such as diseases, entanglements, and even gunshot wounds! Join Jeff this weekend as he goes behind the scenes in the emergency room and finds out how California Sea Lions and other marine animals are treated!
13. Animals in Human Care
Imagine taking care of thousands of animals, including some of the largest marine mammals on the planet. That is the monumental task that the men and women of Georgia Aquarium take on every day. Follow Jeff this weekend as he gets a behind-the-scenes look at how these aquarists keep the animals such as Bottlenose Dolphins and Beluga Whales well fed, healthy, and thriving.
14. Stand By Your Manatee
A long time ago, sailors reported seeing mysterious creatures swimming the oceans that they believed to be mermaids. But it is now believed that what they were actually seeing were Manatees. These ethereal animals can measure up to 13 feet, have paddle-like flippers, and are extremely gentle. Join Jeff this weekend as he explores the world of the Manatee. He’ll swim alongside them, examine their unique characteristics, and endeavor to learn just how intelligent they are!
15. Otter the Blue
The staff at the Monterey Bay Aquarium are on the hunt for a distressed California sea otter that was recently released from the Sea Otter Rescue Program. Will they be able to find the otter, secure him safely, and bring him back in for treatment before it's too late?
16. Best of 2: Jeff's Favorite Ocean Memories
Over the course of the season, we've studied many amazing animals, explored incredible marine environments, and made memories we will never forget. Join Jeff as he reflects on his favorite moments from Ocean Mysteries and looks forward to creating many more!
17. Circle of Life
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we don't always get to see the interconnectedness of the animals that share our planet. Dive in with Jeff as he examines the circle of life in the waters off of Monterey Bay. He'll experience a day in the life of some playful and rambunctious sea lions. And he gets up close and personal with the Ocean Sunfish, the world’s heaviest bony fish and perhaps the most unique looking. He'll see how these creatures survive and play an important role in their ecosystem. It's a side of marine life you don’t often get to see!
18. Secrets of the Deep
Beneath the surface of the ocean lies a world full of mystery. Join Jeff as he dives into the unknown and discovers what is hidden in the depths. He'll uncover fossils from ancient creatures that reveal what life was like thousands of years ago. He'll also encounter a nighttime spectacle of manta rays and go searching for the stealthiest creatures in order to learn the secrets to their survival!
19. Best of 3: Where Are They Now?
Throughout the course of the show, host Jeff Corwin has been a part of several amazing adventures. Some of these have included animal rescues and releases. In this episode he takes a look back at a few of these memorable stories and finds out how these remarkable animals are doing now!
20. Hawaiian Monk Seals
The Hawaiian monk seals are in a fight for the survival of their species. Follow Jeff as he teams up with a group of dedicated men and women from NOAA to learn more about this native Hawaiian species and how to prevent their extinction. They'll travel to a remote island to examine monk seals up close and be a part of a rescue effort to save a monk seal in trouble!
21. Hawaii Fly-O
The native birds of Hawaii face a harrowing future: their extinction as large populations have vanished due to invasive species. Join Jeff as he travels to the rarely seen corners of Hawaii to get an up-close look at the spectacular Laysan albatross and other native bird species. He'll learn how conservation efforts are striving to increase dwindling populations, and he'll even get a special peek at a future generation of these amazing birds!
22. Turtle Tale: Part 2
Once hunted for their meat and eggs, the green sea turtle's population faced extinction, but thanks to conservation efforts and public awareness, their numbers have bounced back! Travel with Jeff as he works with the foremost experts on green sea turtles. He'll get an up-close and personal look at these resilient animals and dive into their underwater world!
23. Elephan-TASTIC! Seals
Every year, Año Nuevo State Park is the mating and birthing grounds of elephant seals. Join Jeff as he gets an amazing look at these monolithic creatures, from the 2½ ton males battling for dominance to the newly weaned pups learning to swim. He'll also witness how some pups are not as lucky and end up stranded or abandoned. He'll take part in a rescue and see how The Marine Mammal Center is working to rehabilitate elephant seals and give them a new chance at life. It's an awe-inspiring journey you won't want to miss!
