Season 2000/01 Plot
ITV won back the Premier League highlights as part of a three year deal. They also obtained Nationwide League rights whilst the BBC regained the FA Cup and England games. It was a major blow to the BBC, but Match of the Day continued to show live FA Cup and European games.

2. 23rd August 2000
Tonight's featured match is Derby County v Newcastle at St James' Park, where both will be hoping to start the current campaign in better form than they began the last. Plus action from other midweek matches.
3. 25th August 2000: Uefa Super Cup Final: Galatasaray v Real Madrid
Coverage from Monaco's Stade Louis II stadium as European Cup champions Real Madrid meet UEFA Cup winners Galatasaray in the Super Cup final. Real will start favourites, with the world's most expensive player, Portugal's Euro 2000 star Luis Figo , in their line-up but Galatasaray should not be underestimated. In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, golden-goal extra time will be played.
4. 26th August 2000
Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson introduce the best of the day's Premiership action, featuring West Ham's performance against Manchester United.

Liverpool will start favourites as they bid to lift this trophy for the third time, but their Spanish opponents should not be underestimated. The most familiar name in the Alaves squad will be attacking midfielder Jordi Cruyff , formerly of Manchester United. Other players to watch out for include striker Javi Moreno , Argentinian midfielder Hermes Desio and goalkeeper Martin Herrera , who last season conceded fewer goals than any other custodian in Spain's Primera Liga. Liverpool's success has been based on rotating a star studded squad. Strikers Michael Owen , Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler are supported by a fluent midfield and a strong defence built around robust Finn Sami Hyypia. Boss Gerard Houllier will be expecting much of young midfield star Steven Gerrard and inspirational veteran Gary McAllister.

After starting badly by losing to Germany, England's wins against Finland and Albania under their new coach Sven Goran Eriksson have rekindled hopes of qualifying for next year's finals. England desperately need a win tonight to gain the three vital points that would secure them at least a place in the play-offs. Greece are nearly out of the World Cup after losing to Albania, but played very impressively in their matches against Germany.
