After his support soldier assignment is canceled, he is given a number of aptitude tests to determine the next course of his career. Soon, he is shipped off to a German colony on the Ceres asteroid where he is trained in ship maintenance. As the years wear on, he is soon promoted to Cargo Engineer aboard ships tasked with the collection of alien technology. All the while, he learns the lengths his superiors will go to gain access to higher degrees of advanced alien technology.

As the completion of his service term nears, Tony Rodrigues is about to enter the most mysterious part of the secret space programs, the return portion of 20 & Back. He admits that what he endured is still baffling to him, as he began his journey as a 9-year old boy, served 20 years, only to return to the same age he left. Years later, as his memories came flooding back, he is working to put many of these scattered fragments together to understand fully what happened to him. Currently, he in contact with many others who are also struggling to make sense of their fragmented memories.

Perhaps one of the strangest parts of Emery Smith's work within the compartmentalized programs was his missions into caverns deep underground.
