5. Hello, Rain

Nigerian director C.J. “Fiery” Obasi brings to life Hugo award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor’s story “Hello, Moto,” which explores what happens when three scientist witches use juju and technology to create wigs that grant supernatural powers.

Brazilian jazz pianist Jonathan Ferr directs this mystical short film soundtracked to Ferr’s song “Luv is The Way” from his album “Trilogia do amor” (Trilogy of Love). Ferr explores the relationship between Aiye and Ona in this time-hopping experiential film.

12. Cinema of the Afrofuture: Souls & Departure

March 26th, 2021

Join “Afrofuturism: Blackness Revisualized” series curator Celia C. Peters for a deep-dive discussion of the festival’s first two films, “Souls” and “Departure.” The panel brings together Malakai (director, “Souls”) and Don Azu Keita (director of “Departure”) to discuss their films, how Alzheimer’s disease affects memory and the significance of Black characters in non-racialized sci-fi stories.

13. Cinema of the Afrofuture: The Abandon & Roxë15

Peters for a discussion of two films from the festival: “The Abandon” and “Roxë15.” Presented as part of the ALL ARTS Talks series, the “Cinema of the Afrofuture” panel will discuss topics such as biotechnology and its capabilities as well as the realities of extra-terrestrial life and what visits to earth may look like.
