Watch the 'Friends' Airport Scene That Was Deleted After 9/11
It was too soon for this "Friends" scene back in 2001. And apparently it was still too soon back in 2007, when a YouTube video of the deleted scene was posted. It took until 2015 for the four-minute clip to truly go viral, showing what NBC cut from an episode that was meant to air shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
As the video notes, at the start:
The following scenes were deleted from the episode 'The One Where Rachel Tells Ross' and are being presented here for the first time. The story involved Chandler joking with security at an airport and was to air two weeks after the events of September 11, 2001. In light of this, we decided to replace the original story. As part of the history of the show, we hope that the scenes can now be viewed in the spirit they were originally intended."
The scene shows newlyweds Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) at the airport. Chandler gets himself detained after noticing a TSA sign that warns people *not* to joke about airport hijackings and bombings ... and of course he makes a joke. Could he BE any more foolish?
It was a good call to remove the scene, considering the horrible timing, but now we're nostalgic for all things "Friends" so we're glad it's available online:
