Trailer for 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Brings Back the First Doctor
The new Doctor Who, Jodie Whittaker, will be introduced in this year's Christmas special, but there's nary a glimpse of her in the new trailer.
Instead, we see the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) meeting The First Doctor, played by "The Strain" star David Bradley. (Aka Argus Filch from the "Harry Potter" films.)
Of course, since the real First Doctor, William Hartnell, died in 1975 (and his initial replacement has also passed away), Bradley is the next best thing.
The special, "Twice Upon a Time," will air on December 25 on BBC America. And it will be playing in theaters on December 27.
The episode will be the last time we see Capaldi, who steps aside for the first-ever female Doctor.
Here's the official synopsis:
The magical final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) journey sees the Time Lord team up with his former self, the first ever Doctor (David Bradley) and a returning Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), for one last adventure.
Two Doctors stranded in an Arctic snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. Enchanted glass people, stealing their victims from frozen time. And a World War One captain destined to die on the battlefield, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor's story.
An uplifting new tale about the power of hope in humanity's darkest hours, 'Twice Upon A Time' marks the end of an era. But as the Doctor must face his past to decide his future, his journey is only just beginning.
An earlier trailer from Fathom Events also features returning character "The Captain," played by Mark Gatiss.
After the Christmas episode, BBC America will air "Doctor Who: Farewell to Peter Capaldi," celebrating the Scottish actor's run as the Time Lord.
