Dean Jones, the genial Disney leading man best known for starring in 1968's "The Love Bug," died at age 84 Tuesday in Los Angeles after battling Parkinson's disease.
The actor appeared in several light-hearted films throughout his career in the 1960s and '70s, including many Disney films like "That Darn Cat!," "The Ugly Dachshund," "Blackbeard's Ghost" and "Snowball Express."
In 1997, he made a cameo in a made-for-TV version of "The Love Bug." The franchise was rebooted in 2005 with Lindsay Lohan starring in "Herbie: Fully Loaded," though Jones was not in the film.
Other film credits include "Clear and Present Danger," "Other People's Money" and "Beethoven."
Jones' last credited roles were 2009's "Mandie and the Secret Tunnel" and "God Provides."
Parkinson's disease affects actor Michael J. Fox, 53, and boxing legend Muhammad Ali, 72. The symptoms of the degenerative disorder can cause shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking. As it progresses, it can lead to dementia and other thinking problems.
Jones is survived by his wife, writer Lory Basham Jones; three children, Caroline Jones, Deanna Demaree and Michael Pastick; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
