'The L Word' Revival Is in the Works at Showtime
A revival of "The L Word" is in the works at Showtime.
The groundbreaking lesbian drama, created by Ilene Chaiken, ran from 2004 to 2009, and featured an ensemble cast including Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig, and Leisha Hailey as lesbians and friends living in Los Angeles.
Showtime is developing a sequel to the series, to be overseen by a new writer/showrunner. The network seems to be in revival mode after it brought back "Twin Peaks."
Chaiken would serve as an executive producer (she is currently an EP on Fox's "Empire"). Beals, Moennig, and Hailey would reprise their roles, and their characters would serve as connections to an ensemble of new women. Other cast members from the original series may also appear, including Erin Daniels, Laurel Holloman, Sarah Shahi and Pam Grier.
"The L Word" was lauded as a fun, glamorous soap opera that portrayed many different lesbian characters. In May, Chaiken told Entertainment Weekly that a revival/reboot of the show was a definite possibility.
"We talk about it all the time," she said. "When we went off the air in 2009, I think a lot of people thought, 'Okay, the baton is passed now, and there will be lots of shows that portray lesbian life.' There's really nothing. It feels like maybe it should come back."
