The 2016 comedy-drama "The Edge of Seventeen" has a spinoff in the works.

YouTube is continuing to build up its catalog of original content for its subscription service, and the company has plans for a potential series inspired by an acclaimed film. YouTube Red has given a pilot production commitment to a spinoff of STX Entertainment's "The Edge of Seventeen" starring Hailee Steinfeld, reports THR. The potential series will apparently offer a new take rather than retelling the same story.

THR reports that the comedy series will center on a high school student and her best friend as they deal with the trials of high school, including love, friendship, and more. Don't get your hopes up for seeing Oscar nominee Steinfeld reprise her role in the spinoff, though. The cast will reportedly be new.

Kelly Fremon Craig, the film's writer, director, and producer is attached to executive produce, while Annabel Oakes will write the series. STXtv's executive vice president and head of scripted television, Jada Miranda, highlighted their involvement and noted that the company "knew there was more story to tell and new ideas to explore." She added that YouTube viewers are "the perfect fit to bring this incredibly funny and smart franchise to life," so we'll see if it ends up coming to fruition.
