'The Darkest Minds' Trailer Pushes Superpowered Teens to Start a Revolution
The kids are all right — but only because they're saving themselves, in the first trailer for "The Darkest Minds."
The movie is based on the bestselling young adult novel by Alexandra Bracken and stars Amandla Stenberg as Ruby, one of many teens who begin to develop special powers. And no, this is not "X-Men," though the story bears similarities to that franchise.
These special kids are classified by type of ability (i.e. mind control) and are kept in camps "for their own safety," but the particularly powerful Ruby ignites a rebellion. "I will fight for all of us," she vows, going on the run with several gifted friends.
The movie's themes fit perfectly to the zeitgeist right now, when young people across the country are rising up to speak out against politicians and the NRA in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
"The Darkest Minds" also stars Mandy Moore and Gwendoline Christie and opens in theaters August 3.
