It all started with the big bang, and the show will likely end with one, too.

"The Big Bang Theory" is in the midst of its 12th and final season, and the end just keeps getting closer. CBS has revealed the series finale date, and yes, it's really happening. The sitcom's hour-long final episode will air on Thursday, May 16, Deadline reports.

News came in August that Season 12 would be the last hurrah for the (mostly) science-loving gang. Jim Parsons (Sheldon) made the decision to move on, and co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre had previously decided the show would end if it lost any of its three main stars. The exit of either Johnny Galecki (Leonard) or Kaley Cuoco (Penny) would also have prompted its cancellation.

"The Big Bang Theory" had a good run. The sitcom, which also stars Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar, has been nominated four times for the outstanding comedy series Primetime Emmy Award. Meanwhile, for his role, Parsons has won three Emmys for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series.

"The Big Bang Theory" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
