Spike Jonze, the director of "Her" and "Being John Malkovich," has been named IMAX Entertainment's first artist in residence.

Variety reports that the Oscar winner — who recently directed Netflix's Aziz Ansari comedy special "Right Now" — will collaborate with IMAX executives to find new partnerships and creative opportunities.

“When Spike and I sat down to talk about this, the ideas just flowed organically,” said Megan Colligan, president of IMAX Entertainment. “He has a real sense of what’s happening in the culture and he’s been operating on the cutting edge of a lot of different spaces.”

Colligan hopes Jonze is just the first of many such artists in residence, who will help the company find new and innovative ways to use its network of screens, particularly during the off-season when there are no summer or holiday blockbusters.

IMAX has been experimenting with showing concerts, sporting events, and even television episodes, like it did with "Game of Thrones." Last month, IMAX premiered Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Anima,” a short film scored by and starring Thom Yorke of Radiohead, in a one-night-only event. Recently, the company screened the concert film "Soundgarden: Live from the Artists Den."

The multi-faceted Jonze has been involved with everything from music videos to shorts to concert tours to documentaries to stage shows.
