Ryan Murphy Turning 'The Prom' Musical Into Netflix Movie
Ryan Murphy is making the most of his mega deal with Netflix.
He's already set "Hollywood," about the Golden Age of Tinseltown, as his first Netflix original series. Now, he has announced his first movie project — an adaptation of the hit musical "The Prom."
Murphy delivered the news Tuesday night during a charity performance of the show at New York's Longacre Theatre. He also shared it on an Instagram post:
"The Prom" tells the story of an Indiana teen who wants to bring her girlfriend to the school's big dance. When they're banned from attending, a cast of Broadway eccentrics band together to help fight the injustice.
It is based on an original concept by Jack Viertel with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Beguelin. Casey Nicholaw directed and choreographed the show.
Murphy called the adaptation "a huge movie event" and revealed it'll debut in September 2020 — right before the next presidential election.
""We want to change hearts, minds and votes," he said.
