Robert Downey Jr. Still Plans to Make 'Sherlock Holmes 3'
Robert Downey Jr. obviously failed in his mission to film his third "Sherlock Holmes" movie by the end of 2016. But don't worry. He hasn't forgotten about it!
In an April 2016 interview with ShortList, RDJ had said he and Guy Ritchie -- director of "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) and "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (2011) -- were talking about the next movie. "We'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I'm tired all the time, but I'm excited about it."
It seemed like a stretch even then -- considering he had "Captain America: Civil War" promotion, and filming for both "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Avengers: Infinity War." So it was not a shock that he didn't get it done in 2016. Or 2017.
But here we are in 2018 ... and RDJ is still super busy. But he was the one who brought up the third Sherlock Holmes movie during an "Avengers: Infinity War"-focused interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Here's that part of EW's article:
And what's next? You and your wife [producer Susan Downey] have the Team Downey production company. You're talking to animals while shooting The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle. What's on the horizon?
First of all the missus is front and center with Joe Roth producing Doolittle. I'm having a good time, though I decided to give myself, like, 40 additional challenges, like a Welsh accent — which even Welsh people say is hard to do. Then there's all this stuff down the pike. We're looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we're developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio. That's a full slate.
I have a million ideas, but I can tell you the God's honest truth. Having done Avengers 3 and 4 back-to-back, and now doing [Doolittle] ... When I'm done with this, if you hear I'm not taking a break, call me and tell me I'm crazy.
So he'll probably take a break after playing Doctor Doolittle. But it would be nice to see his Sherlock Holmes again, with Jude Law back as John Watson.
Fun fact: Both modern Sherlocks -- RDJ and Benedict Cumberbatch -- will costar in "Avengers: Infinity War." And their Watsons are both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well -- Jude Law joining the MCU in "Captain Marvel," and Martin Freeman costarring in "Black Panther."
Maybe the real question is when will Jude Law have time for "Sherlock Holmes 3," between his new role in the MCU and playing young Dumbledore in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise?
"Avengers: Infinity War" opens April 27th.
