'Riverdale' Fans Don't Buy the Black Hood Reveal, and Neither Does Lili Reinhart
Um, no. "Riverdale" Season 2 "revealed" -- staying in quotes -- the identity of the Black Hood killer in last night's December 13 episode. Fans weren't convinced, and went into "Pretty Little Liars" mode, fully expecting a twist behind the twist. It's possible those fans are right.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Mr. Svenson? The janitor? Yeah. OK.
Apparently Svenson -- real name Joseph Conway -- was the sole survivor of the Riverdale Reaper's attack on his family. Joseph identified someone as the killer, and the town served him vigilante justice. But Joseph was wrong, and an innocent man died. So maybe he decided to take out sinners as his own form of justice? He's dead now, killed by Sheriff Keller. Was Svenson working with the Black Hood, and allowed himself to be killed as self-punishment for what he did? Sheriff Killer could still be the real Black Hood. Or not.
Fans weren't sure what to think:
The Black Hood reveal tonight was ... underwhelming? I just expected more of a shock and instead it was " oh ... okay." I really hope it turns out to be someone else and this is just a misdirect for now. #Riverdale

Yeah, I'm convinced that the revealed Black Hood was a red herring & really isn't the actual Black Hood. #Riverdalepic.twitter.com/mVq57HYUBj

#CWRiverdale tbh janitor svenson did not look like the black hood, the eyes were different... right? i think the real black hood cut off his finger and blackmailed him or something. i think the real black hood is still alive ????????

I like how the show tried to throw the creepy undertones of the janitor tho just to make us believe more and more he's really the black hood like I said nice try but y'all not fooling me at all sway #Riverdalepic.twitter.com/wY3RxKhlg3

Interesting that the sheriff shot him before he could say anything. I'm thinking black hood made him do it. #riverdalepic.twitter.com/wkN4O0VmvX

Literally no one is accusing Sheriff Keller as the black hood anymore and it's bugging me ????
Here is why (from the most recent episode alone) Sheriff HAS to be the black hood(If you haven't heard the other reasons here: https://t.co/ksiVMnLLzC )#Riverdalepic.twitter.com/A5CgzQSEyb

HE WAS THE HOOD I DON'T BELIEVE IT IF I'M BEING HONEST. I THINK IT WAS STAGED BECAUSE THE SIRENS WENT OFF ON THE OTHER SIDE SO HOW DID SHERIFF KELLER GET TO THE OTHER SIDE IN TIME !??! #Riverdalepic.twitter.com/KeJyNBUluf

#Riverdale#Riverdaleblackhood#blackhood Does anyone else think Sheriff Keller made Joseph Conway pretend to be the black hood and framed him? It just seems off and too perfect of a situation.

Interestingly enough, the real life Betty Cooper is questioning the reveal herself.
Lili Reinhart talked to Glamour after the winter finale, admitting, "Even at the end of the episode, things don't really feel resolved. Things don't feel right. At least for me watching it, you don't feel like the mystery was solved; like, there's still some deep, dark, unspoken mystery going on—and that's intriguing. There are a lot of questions."
Glamour asked when she found out who was the Black Hood, and if she was surprised:
"I found out when I got the script. Obviously, Svenson wasn't even a character [on Riverdale] until Episode 7, so you didn't even know who this person was [until then]. So there was no way you could have predicted that. But even shooting the episode...I do think that Svenson wasn't really the Black Hood, and that the situation is not really over. I think there's much more to it, whatever it may be. I don't think the Black Hood mystery is completely solved just yet. [...] I've seen so many theories of who people think it is, but I honestly don't know! I don't think the mystery has been solved yet."
She doesn't know? Is she serious? Wouldn't they have filmed that by this point, even if the episode hasn't aired? Maybe they really are holding it over until late in the season.
You had to know there wouldn't be an easy resolution to this thing.
A few weeks ago, Glamour talked to K.J. Apa and Madelaine Petsch about the Black Hood reveal.
K.J. Apa: I already knew. I guessed it. But everything is very...it's hard to say.
Madelaine Petsch: I didn't guess it. When I read it, it shocked me, but you won't have to wait much longer. A couple more episodes and the mystery will be revealed.
So has the mystery been revealed, or is it still "very...it's hard to say"? We're going with the latter.
"Riverdale" Season 2 returns with Episode 10, "Chapter Twenty-Three: The Blackboard Jungle," on January 17.
