'Rescue Rangers' Film Lands Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer to Direct
What's a mash-up of Disney's "Rescue Rangers" and the sensibilities of "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" going to look like?
Akiva Schaffer, one-third of the Lonely Island comedy group and co-director of "Pop Star," will direct the studio’s live-action/CG hybrid update of the adventures of Chip 'n' Dale.
The upcoming take on the animated series is being described as "meta" and "cool," but if it's Disney, it's surely going to remain family friendly. Unlike the R-rated "Pop Star" or Lonely Island's Emmy-winning "SNL" song "Dick in a Box."
It reportedly won't feature the chipmunk duo's detective agency and it won't be an origin story.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, who produced "The Muppets" and "Beauty and the Beast" for the studio, are heading up the project.
It's not clear yet if the movie will end up in theaters or on Disney+, the studio's upcoming streaming service.
Schaffer, who also played bitter ex-boy band star Lawrence in "Pop Star," is executive producer of the Hulu comedy "Pen15," and the Netflix comedy series "I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson."
