Netflix has canceled yet another series, and this time, the family comedy "One Day at a Time" was the one on the chopping block.

The streamer announced Thursday that it had made the "very difficult decision" not to renew the show for Season 4. Unfortunately, the "One Day at a Time" fan base was just not big enough. The Netflix Twitter account shared the rationale, posting in part, "The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season."

Netflix's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, reinforced that message, saying in a statement (via Deadline), "While it's disappointing that more viewers didn’t discover 'One Day at a Time,' I believe the series will stand the test of time." He also thanked executive producer Norman Lear, co-creators Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce, stars Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, as well as the rest of the cast, crew, and writers.

The show isn't officially dead, though. Calderón Kellett and Royce released a statement of their own on Twitter, and they wrote that they are looking for a new home for the series. In a separate tweet, Calderón Kellett added that they have "a lot more for these wonderful characters to do."

"One Day at a Time" might not have the viewership Netflix was looking for, but it has been a critical darling since it debuted in January 2017. We'll keep watching to see if Season 4 does indeed land elsewhere.
