Fans may be sad that "The Vampire Diaries" is ending, but Nina Dobrev thinks "everyone will be happy" with how it ends. 'Cause if you're going to leave, you better leave on a high note. Fans never forget or forgive a disappointing finale. No pressure, though!

"The Vampire Diaries" series finale airs tonight (Friday, March 10) with Season 8, Episode 16, "I Was Feeling Epic." First, a retrospective will air from 8 to 9 p.m., taking fans down memory lane with the cast and crew.

One of those cast members is Nina Dobrev, who left the show at the end of Season 6, and returned just for the finale. Dobrev talked to Entertainment Weekly about saying this final goodbye, and how proud she is of the "bittersweet" last episode:

"This goodbye feels different than it did when I left the first time because I was leaving and the show continued, and now the show's ending for everyone. It feels more final. It's more almost like closure. Everyone's been very nostalgic; it's a bittersweet ending. I'm very happy that we were able to make it work and that I came back because I really missed the whole family and wanted to be part of the final goodbye. It really has felt like the closure that I needed — that hopefully everybody needs — and I think it ends in such a beautiful way that everyone will be happy."

After eight seasons, co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson knew they had to answer one question when they sat down to write the series finale: What do they want the show to be about? "This show's always been about family; this show's always been about huge, emotional loss; it's always been about death and grief," Williamson says. "It started on those foundations and from it we built a love story, but what are we truly trying to say about these people and how do we want to put an end to them? What was the point? Julie had one answer and I had another answer, and they're both spoken in the show. It's all contained within the last act of the finale."

Hopefully Nina Dobrev is right and fans are happy with the show's "beautiful" end, even if there's more "huge, emotional loss ... death and grief." 'Cause you know fans won't be shy about mentioning it if they're displeased.
