New on DVD and Blu-ray

• "Ready Player One"
Press play on Steven Spielberg's sci-fi blockbuster when it arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday, July 24th. The home release comes with more than 90 minutes of bonus features and Easter Eggs, including several behind-the-scenes featurettes on the making of the film.

• "Operation Red Sea"
This film was just a massive box office hit in China, so you may want to give it a look. Said to be China's first modern naval film, it's the seventh-highest grossing film of 2018 so far (in the world) and it arrives on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 24. "When a terrorist plot to obtain nuclear materials is hidden under the cover of a violent coup, only the Chinese Navy's elite Jiaolong (Sea Dragon) Assault Team have the deadly skill and precision needed to take on the situation."

• "Keeping Faith"
The Acorn TV Original Series "Keeping Faith" will debut on DVD/Blu-ray on July 24. Compared to "Loch Ness" and "Broadchurch," this thriller filmed along the stunning Welsh coast tells the story of lawyer, wife, and mother Faith Howells (Eve Myles) as she fights to find the truth behind the sudden and unexpected disappearance of her husband. The 3-disc sets feature 8 episodes, plus bonus behind-the-scenes featurettes. If you get hooked, there's good news: The series has already been renewed for a second season.

• "Gravity Falls"
On July 24, "Gravity Falls: The Complete Series" will be available for the first time in a complete series box set. Watch Disney’s Emmy Award-winning show on Blu-ray and DVD in two editions: The Collector’s Edition is a seven-disc box set with an entire disc of bonus features; there's also a six-disc retail edition that includes all 40 episodes of the series, but does not include the bonus feature disc.

New Video on Demand, Streaming, and Digital

• "Castle Rock" (Hulu)
Stephen King. He's so hot right now. Stephen King. "Castle Rock" is the ultimate Uncle Stevie anthology, packed with references to several of his stories. The amazing cast is led by André Holland, Bill Skarsgard ("It"), Sissy Spacek ("Carrie"), Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy, Scott Glenn, and Terry O'Quinn. "In answer to a mysterious phone call from Shawshank, Henry Deaver (Holland) returns home to Castle Rock." Stream the series on Hulu starting July 25; here's the trailer.

• "Anchors Up"
This new musical animated film will be available for digital download and On Demand July 24. "After a daring rescue mission in stormy weather, Elias, a brave young rescue boat, is recruited by a larger harbor. Once he gets to Big Harbor to begin his new job, however, he discovers that bigger is not always better."

• "Westworld" Season 2
Do your best to understand the various timelines and twists of HBO's challening second season, which will be available to own on digital this Monday, July 23. "Westworld Season 2: The Door" will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 4. The digital release comes with all 10 episodes and tons of bonus content explaining what the hell happened. Or at least exploring it further

• "Ferrari: Race to Immortality"
Tell the car lover in your family about this documentary, arriving on VOD July 24. "The 1950s. Dawn of the iconic Scuderia Ferrari in the Formula One World Championship and deadliest decade in motor racing history. ... At the centre of it all was Enzo Ferrari, a towering figure in motor racing and patriarch of Ferrari who dared to dream about speed in ways nobody else could. .... 'Ferrari: Race to Immortality' tells the story of the loves and losses, triumphs and tragedy of Ferrari's most decorated drivers in an era where it was la dolce vita during the week and a coin toss of whether they lived or died on the weekend."

• "Breaking In"
Gabrielle Union stars in this action thriller arriving as an Unrated Director's Cut on Digital and Movies Anywhere on July 24. "Shaun Russell (Union) takes her son and daughter on a weekend getaway to her late father's secluded, high-tech vacation home in the countryside where the family soon receives an unwelcome surprise from four men who break into the house in search of a hidden safe." The release comes with several extras, including an alternate opening, deleted and extended scenes, feature commentary, and several behind-the-scenes featurettes.

• "Extinction" (Netflix Film)
It's Luis from "Ant-Man" and Luke Cage -- together at the end of the world! Michael Peña, Mike Colter, and Lizzy Caplan star in this sci-fi thriller coming to Netflix this Friday, July 27. "A father has a recurring dream of losing his family. His nightmare turns into reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Now, fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep them safe from harm." Check out the trailer.

• "Orange Is the New Black" Season 6 (Netflix Original)
A whole new world awaits in Season 6, which streams July 27. "Picking up one week after the emergency response team stormed Litchfield Penitentiary, the ladies of Litch have been torn apart, literally and figuratively, as they enter a new facility." • "The Bleeding Edge" (Netflix Original)
Netflix documentaries are always the best. But this one investigating the crimes of Big Medical may make you sick to your stomach. investigates the crimes of Big Medical. "What you don't know, can hurt you. ... America has the most technologically advanced health care system in the world, yet medical interventions have become the third leading cause of death, and the overwhelming majority of high-risk implanted devices never require a single clinical trial." • "Roman Empire: Reign of Blood: Master of Rome" (Netflix Original)
This mix of documentary and historical epic -- narrated by the inimitable Sean Bean -- chronicles the violent and turbulent reigns of ancient Rome's most powerful emperors. Season 2, called "Master of Rome," premieres July 27.

• "The Worst Witch" Season 2 (Netflix Original)
Mildred Hubble returns in Season 2 of the British TV show, based on the beloved novels by Jill Murphy. The magic arrives on Netflix this Friday, July 27. Check out the trailer.

• "Cupcake & Dino - General Services" (Netflix Original)
New cartoon alert: "Cupcake and Dino are two brothers who set out to make a name for themselves in the super-competitive General Services industry. Follow their larger-than-life exploits starting July 27th." Here's the trailer.

 

TV Worth Watching

• "The Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis" (Sunday on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.)
Bruce Willis was already roasted in this pre-taped special, and by all accounts it was brutal -- but also hilarious. Demi Moore was a surprise addition, and you should watch to see her land some zingers at her ex's expense. (He's a good sport about the whole thing.) Watch Bruce die hard from laughing when the roast airs this Sunday, July 29.

• "Swedish Dicks" Season 2 (Thursday on Pop TV at 10 p.m.)
Peter Stormare and Johan Glans return for the 10-episode second season of this Pop TV comedy. Stormare's aging ex-stuntman and Glans' struggling DJ join forces to form the private detective firm Swedish dicks, solving some pretty wild cases.

• "Ted Williams: The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived" (Monday on PBS at 9 p.m.)
Narrated by Jon Hamm, this documentary explores not only the Baseball Hall of Famer’s remarkable on-field accomplishments but also his complicated relationships with his family, teammates, press, fans and himself. HBO's doc features never-before-seen footage of Ted Williams’ final game, and includes new interviews with Bob Costas, Wade Boggs, Ben Bradlee Jr. and Joey Votto.
