Neon Acquires Cannes Winner 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire,' Sets December Release
"Portrait of a Lady on Fire," Céline Sciamma's 18th-century lesbian romance that won a Best Screenplay Prize at Cannes, was just picked up by Neon for a December 6 limited release in the U.S.
It stars Adèle Haenel ("The Unknown Girl") and Noémie Merlant ("Heaven Will Wait") and was inspired by the forbidden romance in Jane Campion’s "The Piano."
Sciamma wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-nominated animated film "My Life as a Zucchini." She also wrote and directed the César-nominated "Girlhood."
"Portrait" is likely to be in competition with two other French Cannes winners, Mati Diop’s "Atlantics" and Ladj Ly’s "Les Misérables" as the official submission for Best Foreign Film at this year's Oscars.
Neon also picked up Palme d’Or winner, Bong Joon-Ho’s "Parasite," before the festival.
The company, which was founded in 2017, also distributed Oscar-nominated Swedish film "Border" and "I, Tonya," which scored a Best Supporting Actress win for Allison Janney.
