NBC Sets 'Jesus Christ Superstar' as Next Live Musical Event
NBC is going Biblical for its next live musical event. The network has ordered a live version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" to air next Easter, April 1, 2018.
It will follow on the heels of "Bye Bye Birdie Live!," starring Jennifer Lopez, which debuts in December. NBC has had success in recent years with live musicals including "Sound of Music," "Peter Pan," "The Wiz," and "Hairspray."
"Jesus Christ Superstar" creators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice are on board to executive produce the live broadcast version of their 1971 rock opera, which was based on a hit concept album that hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. It follows the last week of Jesus's life, and includes figures like Mary Magdalene, Judas Iscariot, and Pontius Pilate.
"Casting has just begun, but we want to fill out this classic show with as many recording artists as possible to give proper voice to what is the original rock opera score," said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment.
