MPAA Slaps 'Fifty Shades of Grey' with R Rating for 'Unusual Behavior'
Some call it bondage; the Motion Picture Association of America calls it "unusual behavior."
That's the word from Variety, which reports that the MPAA has slapped steamy novel adaptation "Fifty Shades of Grey" with an R rating ahead of its February release. That news should either delight or disappoint fans of E.L. James's series, which is chock full of graphic sex scenes which now may or may not get their full due on the big screen.
"Fifty Shades" had at one time been considered a threat to get the dreaded NC-17 rating, though director Sam Taylor-Johnson has toned down some of the book's naughtier bits (and one of star Jamie Dornan's specific naughty bits) in order to earn the R and reach a wider audience. Variety reports that the MPAA gave the movie an R rating thanks to its "strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity."
The "unusual behavior" descriptor seems rather hilarious to us, though perhaps it's best that the MPAA left the specifics unsaid. And in a way, that nondescript description could entice audience members all the more, since it leaves lots to the imagination, and curious moviegoers may want to see what all the fuss is about.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" hits theaters on February 13.
