Most Romantic Movies on Netflix Streaming

Sharon Knolle
February 10, 2015 - 1 min read

Why go out on Valentine's Day? Instead of dealing with crowded, overpriced restaurants, you (and you honey) can just stay in and stream your favorite romantic movies. Grab that box of chocolates, add these movies to your streaming list and enjoy romance at its most cinematic.

'Moonstruck' (1987)

Cher and Nicolas Cage shouldn't love each other, but they do, madly, passionately: As he tells her after taking her to "La Boheme," "Love don't make things nice, it ruins everything... We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die." Vive amoré! Watch now.

'Sense and Sensibility' (1995)

Which romance do you choose in this beloved Jane Austen adaptation? Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant's understated, undeclared love? Kate Winslet's wild infatuation with the dashing Greg Wise? Or Alan Rickman's undying devotion to Winslet, who barely knows he's alive? Watch now.

'An Affair to Remember' (1957)

Hollywood romance at its most iconic: After a whirlwind shipboard romance, Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant arrange to meet at the Empire State Building six months later. Only she doesn't show... when he finally learns why, get the tissues. Watch now.

'Shakespeare in Love' (1998)

Falling in love with the Bard himself? What could be more romantic? Gwyneth Paltrow won an Oscar for playing a girl who disguises herself as a boy so she can act: Joseph Fiennes was her dreamy, ink-stained Shakespeare. Also: Ben Affleck's first time in tights. Watch now.

'A Room With a View' (1985)

When impulsive, idealistic George (Julian Sands) plants a kiss on unsuspecting Lucy (Helena Bonham Carter) in a lush Italian landscape, her knees buckled, as did ours. She spends the rest of the film in denial of her feelings but true love cannot be denied. Watch now.

'Dirty Dancing' (1987)

For a film that's about "dirty" dancing, the romance between Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) is sweet enough to give you a toothache. And who can forget that the iconic "jump into my arms" scene became smooth operator Ryan Gosling's signature move in "Crazy, Stupid Love." Cheesy? Yes? Romantic? Oh, yes. Watch now.

'Ghost' (1990)

You expected us to focus on the sexy pottery scene, didn't you? But when a man loves a woman this much, even after death, and will do absolutely anything to protect her? Well, that's incredibly romantic. Now that Patrick Swayze's gone, Sam's final farewell is even more tear-inducing. Watch now.

'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (2000)

Although it's a terrific action film, this gorgeous Ang Lee movie also features one of the most beautiful, aching romances between beautiful young Jiao Long Yu (Zhang Ziyi) and the bandit Jiao Long Yu( Chen Chang), as well as the decades-long, unspoken love between Chow Yun-Fat) and Michelle Yeoh. Watch now.

'Witness' (1985)

As Harrison Ford says in the famous car radio scene: "Ahh, this is great. This is the best." A wounded city cop forced to hide out with an Amish widow is a recipe for smoldering, forbidden romance. Their climactic kiss is all the more passionate since there won't be another. Watch now.

'The English Patient' (1996)

There's more than one epic romance in this Oscar-winner. Besides Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes's tragic affair, there's the love between Naveen Andrews and Juliette Binoche, highlighted by the glorious, candle-lit scene where he shows her church frescoes by hoisting her on a rope. Now that's romance. Watch now.

'The Quiet Man' (1952)

There always seems to be a storm happening when hotheaded Maureen O'Hara and stubborn John Wayne kiss, as when they take shelter in a cemetery during a rainstorm. If this rain-soaked kiss doesn't curl your toes, you don't have a romantic bone in your body. Watch now.

'Amélie' (2001)

To call this sumptuous French film a "romantic comedy" is so very wrong: Amélie (Audrey Tatou)'s wildly visual daydreams transcend her ordinary reality, but her secret crush on Nino (Mathieu Kassovitz) blossoms into much more than a fantasy in the sweetest way. Watch now.

'William Shakespear's Romeo + Juliet' (1996)

Was young love ever swoonier? Leonardo DiCaprio falls instantly for Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann's frenzied but utterly romantic update on the Shakespeare tragedy. Watch now.

'Jerry Maguire' (1996)

Amidst all the 'Show me the money' shouting and talk of how much human heads weigh, there's a surprisingly sweet old-fashioned romance summed up in one line: You had me at hello.

'Four Weddings and a Funeral' (1994)

Mostly we forget how badly Andie MacDowell treated Hugh Grant and we remember the passionate kiss in the rain when they finally get together. And Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas) being photographed with Prince Charles. That, for 1994, was a happy ending. Watch now.

'Emma' (1996)

Perhaps you know the Jane Austen classic best as the inspiration for "Clueless" -- meddling rich girl plays matchmaker for all her friends but love eludes her. Until she realizes that her true love is right under her nose. The scene where he proposes is pure, heart-soaring romance. Watch now.

'Stardust' (2007)

This sweeping fantasy (based on the Neil Gaiman novel) begins with a young man (Charlie Cox) who captures a falling star (Claire Danes) to win his "true love." At first, she's his captive but soon he's fighting for her freedom and becoming the hero he was meant to be. Watch now.

'While You Were Sleeping' (1995)

Sandra Bullock has been romanced by many men onscreen, including Hugh Grant, Keanu Reeves, and Benjamin Bratt. But her best chemistry ever is with Bill Pullman in this underrated comedy where she saves his brother's life, then realizes Pullman is the one for her. Watch now.

'Romancing the Stone' (1984)

Michael Douglas is a roguish adventurer, Kathleen Turner is a romance novelist out to rescue her kidnapped sister. Together, they're one of our favorite duos of the '80s. Joan Wilder, write us into this one, please. Watch now.

'Pretty in Pink' (1985)

While the prettiest person in this movie might be young James Spader (as villainous Steff), Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy were adorable as a high school couple from (literally!) the opposite side of the tracks. And despite Molly's hideous home-made dress, the prom scene is rom-com perfection. Watch now.
