Michael J. Fox was unsure of his future before he went "Back to the Future."

The actor spoke to Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday--otherwise known as "Back to the Future Day," a day that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the franchise and the date Fox's character time traveled to the future in the sequel. Fox revealed that he didn't exactly read the script before wanting to star as Marty McFly.

"The first time I read it I didn't really read it," he said after recreating a scene from the show for the late-night host. "They wanted to hire me from the beginning and I didn't know this. I was doing 'Teen Wolf' at the time and I was thinking my career was over."

At the time, he was also filming "Family Ties" and the creator, Gary Goldberg, wouldn't let him out to film the movie.

"They started to make it with another actor and they shot for five weeks and it was a really good actor, Eric Stoltz, but it really just didn't work out, and so they went back to Gary and said, 'Can we see him? Can we have him now?' And Gary said, 'I think we can make it work now.'"

Fox said he was handed the script in an envelope, and he weighed it in his hands without even looking at it. He recalled saying, "It's the best script I ever read."

Nowadays, he said he still gets asked about the movie trilogy.

"I get all those questions about hover boards and flying cars," he said, "and I always say that the one thing that they really got right was Marty McFly's receding hairline."
