Meryl Streep Reacts to Donald Trump Calling Her 'Overrated'
One or two (million) people had strong reactions to Meryl Streep's anti-Trump speech at the Golden Globe Awards, and one of those people was President Donald Trump. He tweeted that she was "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood" and a "Hillary flunky who lost big." Fellow celebs came to Streep's defense, and the Academy is still on her side, since they just gave her a record 20th Oscar nomination.
Streep referenced Trump's overrated quote in a self-deprecating comment during her speech Saturday, Feb. 11 at the 2017 Human Rights Campaign Greater New York Gala:
"Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated, and currently, over-berated actress... of my generation. But that is why you invited me here! Right?"
Streep was actually invited to accept the Ally for Equality Award, recognizing those who give their voices to help the LGBTQ community.
In her speech, Streep also clarified her Golden Globes quote about football and martial arts not being "the arts," saying she does like football.
"I have watched more football in 60 years than anybody here. But if you hear a woman in a restaurant say, 'My son is very interested in the arts,' she's not talking about football or mixed martial arts because they're just not the same thing. Some of us like football, some of us like the arts, many of us want both in our lives... I was making a joke, and Mike Nichols told me, 'If you have to explain the joke, Meryl, you're doomed.'"
On a more serious note, Streep continued to challenge the current administration, without mentioning Trump by name:
"'Evil prospers when good men do nothing'... ain't that the truth. [...] But if we live through this precarious moment... if his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn't lead us to nuclear winter, we will have much to thank this president for because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is... The whip of the Executive can, through a Twitter feed, lash and intimidate, punish and humiliate, delegitimize the press and imagined enemies with spasmodic regularity and easily provoked predictability."
Streep is not a frontrunner to win Best Actress at this year's Oscars (Emma Stone, Natalie Portman, Isabelle Huppert, and Ruth Negga all have better odds) but if she does manage to win, you can expect another classic speech. The Oscars will be awarded out Sunday, Feb. 26 on ABC.
