'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Season 7 to End Series on ABC
The end is nigh for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
The superhero spy series is set to end after its upcoming seventh season on ABC. The news came before the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday, when Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb spoke with Deadline. He shared why they're ending the show and what fans can expect from its conclusion.
Loeb acknowledged that fans may be disappointed to see the show go, but was quick to highlight that they still have the remainder of Season 6 and all of Season 7 to look forward to. Additionally, he pointed out that by choosing to end the show now, the creative team "can end on our own terms" and "make sure that we come to a conclusion that's satisfying to the fans, to the cast, to Marvel, and to ABC."
"When you know that's what you're doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death," Loeb told Deadline. "Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you're not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You're playing that this is going to be the end of the story."
It might be small comfort to fans now, but the show will ultimately end two seasons after it previously was intended to. Loeb noted that they thought "Season 5 was the end" and wrote it that way. So, really, we're lucky to be getting a seventh season, even if we'd still happily watch more.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has had a good run. It kicked off in 2013, becoming the first of many MCU TV series. And hey, there's always hope for more in some form in the future. As Loeb said, "Every great Marvel story ends to be continued."
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
