After years in limbo, a movie about the world's most famous doll, Barbie, is finally coming to the big screen. And it's got the perfect star attached.

According to Variety, Margot Robbie has been confirmed to headline "Barbie," portraying the titular toy that's been a staple of childhood play for generations. Robbie -- who will also produce the project -- had been rumored to be in consideration for the part last year, after several other high-profile attempts to bring the doll to the big screen (including versions where she was played by Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway) failed to come together.

In a statement, Robbie noted that the iconic toy represented more than just a doll.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” Robbie said. “I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”

According to Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, the studio plans to "bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today’s audiences." There's no word yet on who may direct, but if the rumor about Patty Jenkins circling the project also comes true, this film will definitely be a must-see.

"Barbie" had previously been due for a 2020 release date at old studio Sony. Stay tuned to see when Warner Bros. and Robbie plan to debut the feature.
