Mahershala Ali in Talks to Star in 'True Detective' Season 3
Oscar winner "True Detective."
According to the Tracking Board, the "Moonlight" actor is close to a deal to play Season 3's lead. Technically, HBO hasn't greenlit a third season, though creator Nic Pizzolatto has reportedly written at least two episodes and "Deadwood" mastermind David Milch has come on board to aid in writing and development.
HBO is likely waiting to judge the quality of the scripts and casting decisions before ordering Season 3. While the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, received rave reviews, Season 2 — starring Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Colin Farrell — was a disappointment.
Ali won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in "Moonlight." He's also known for excellent work in television shows like "House of Cards" and "Luke Cage."
If "True Detective" Season 3 follows a similar structure to the previous two seasons, Ali will need a detective partner. Here's an idea: Do a "Moonlight"/"La La Land" pairing with Emma Stone or Ryan Gosling.
