Live-Action 'Gundam' Movie Taps Writer Brian K. Vaughan
The live-action movie version of the "Gundam" series has found a writer.
Comic book and television writer Brian K. Vaughan ("Runaways," "Saga") will pen the screenplay as part of his three-year overall deal with Legendary Entertainment, according to Deadline.
"Gundam" is a popular sci-fi franchise created by Sunrise featuring giant robots (mecha). The franchise started 40 years ago with the anime TV series "Mobile Suit Gundam," which followed giant robots called mobile suits that were piloted by people in battles.
The series spawned other animated shows and movies, novels, video games, merchandise, toys, and plastic models. It also heavily influenced the mecha genre; "Pacific Rim" is one of its direct descendants.
Gundam is estimated to be the 15th highest-grossing media franchise of all time, generating more than $15 billion in total revenue.
Vaughan is an acclaimed writer in the comics and television realms. He wrote for "Lost" and co-created "Under the Dome." He penned the first two episodes of Hulu's "Runaways," which was based on his comic books.
Next, he's executive producing the adaptation of his comics "Y: The Last Man" for FX.
