Lady Gaga Reportedly Disney's Top Choice for Ursula in Live-Action 'The Little Mermaid'
Pity the poor unfortunate souls at Disney if they don't get to cast Lady Gaga after this rumor.
Disney news site The DisInsider was told by "a source close to the project" that Lady Gaga is high on Disney's wish list for the upcoming live-action "The Little Mermaid." They said she was most likely being considered for Ursula.
They couldn't confirm anything -- and it definitely sounds like it's too early for Gaga to be in "talks," etc. -- but just floating the rumor could build enough interest on its own. Lady Gaga is hot off "A Star Is Born," so it's believable enough to think another film might want to be her next musical project.
So far, all we have for "The Little Mermaid" cast are rumors -- including that Zendaya may play Ariel.
According to DisInsider, Rob Marshall ("Mary Poppins Returns," "Into the Woods") is set to direct the live-action film, from a script by Jane Goldman ("Kingsman," upcoming "Game of Thrones" spinoff). The dream team of Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda are composing music for the film, which will add some new songs.
Disney is churning out new live-action remakes every few months. In the next year, we'll see "Dumbo," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King" on the big screen, plus "Lady and the Tramp" likely helping to launch Disney's new streaming service at the end of 2019. "Mulan" and "Maleficent II" are scheduled for 2020. "Lilo & Stitch" was also just announced.
Disney has yet to set a release date for this "Little Mermaid" remake, and we're on standby for any official information.
