'La La Land' Nabs Best Film Prize from New York Film Critics Circle
"La La Land" just nabbed its biggest accolade yet: The best picture prize from the New York Film Critics Circle.
The acclaimed musical from "Whiplash" writer-director Damien Chazelle, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, was honored with the NYFCC's top prize among 2016 films, though the critics group spread the love among many other movies for the rest of its honors. "Moonlight" and "Manchester by the Sea," which have both been hailed with their own best film awards by other organizations in recent weeks, each earned three prizes from the NYFCC.
It should be interesting to see how the Oscar nominations line up with the NYFCC's picks, especially considering that last year's best film winner, "Carol," did not go on to earn a Best Picture citation from the Academy. But "La La Land" has plenty of buzz in its corner (critics were hailing the flick as an early Oscar frontrunner as far back as September), and with this newest accolade under its belt, it doesn't look like the film will be slowing down its awards momentum anytime soon.
The full list of winners hailed by the NYFCC is below. The prizes will be handed out at a ceremony in New York City in January.
