Cuoco played the titular teen, Bridget Hennessy, on the series, and Ritter played her beleaguered dad, Paul. The show premiered in 2002, and was in production on its second season on September 11, 2003, when Ritter became ill on set, complaining of chest pain and nausea during rehearsal.
The actor was hospitalized later that day, and was initially misdiagnosed with a heart attack; he died that night from complications from an aortic dissection. He was 54.
Ritter's death was written into "8 Simple Rules," which continued for an additional season after his passing. It was canceled by ABC in 2005.
