21 Times 'Jurassic World' Calls Back to 'Jurassic Park'
With everyone talking about "Jurassic World" and its people-eating dinos, here are 21 times "JW" makes references to the original "Jurassic Park."
1. "Welcome to Jurassic Park"
"JW's" first trailer included a shot of the new park's version of the first film's iconic gates. They "spared no expense."
2. Gallimius Still Be Flocking
The ostrich-like dinosaurs that almost ran over Dr. Grant and the kids are still "flocking this way" on the island. Sans being turned into snacks by the T-Rex.
3. Fun With Fossils
Early in "JW," children are shown dusting off fossils in a kiddie park of sorts -- much like these dino experts here from "JP." In fact, this scenes opens with a shot similar to the one in the original film.
4. Mr. DNA
It's a brief cameo in the park's shiny new Visitor Center, but it was enough to get Mr. DNA's pronunciation of "dino-sauuur" stuck in our heads for days.
5. Mosquito in Amber
John Hammond's cool-ass cane topper is now a paperweight on Dr. Wu's desk. There's also a wall decorated with more amber-ized bugs. Speaking of Dr. Wu...
6. The Return of Dr. Wu
Wu's traded in his clipboard and lab coat for a villainous turtleneck, as Jurassic World's chief dino-splicer becomes arguably the world's greediest mad scientist in the new film.
7. The Visitor Center
The iconic location for the OG "JP" plays a key role in "World," specifically the building's iconic wooden doors.
8. Gas Jeeps
Our kid-sized heroes of "Jurassic World" use their car mechanic skills (because reasons) to bring one of these gas-guzzling jeeps to life.
9. Dr. Sattler's Outfit
Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) makes a subtle homage to Dr. Sattler when, realizing S has gotten very R, she ties off her shirt at the waist. (But she doesn't eat a tub of ice cream and listen to an old man talk about his flea circus.)
10. Ian Malcolm's Cameo
It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter Egg, but our favorite leather-jacketed Chaos-tician has a book that Claire's assistant reads. It's also on the desk of tech Lowery (Jake Johnson). Our favorite chapter? "How to Use Water Droplets to Flirt With Science Ladies".
11. "Cool, Night Vision!"
Our trip to the original film's Visitor Center includes quick shots of Tim's cool goggles (left), those really bulky, silver walkie-talkies and some hard hats and merch sporting the "Jurassic Park" logo.
12. The "Spitter"
AKA dilophosaurus. This venom-spitting dino makes a cameo this time as a hologram used to distract a raptor on the hunt.
13. "Must move faster!"
This iconic shot from the first film gets an upgrade, swapping a T-Rex for a raptor, when Claire and her nephews are being chased in a car by the "clever girl."
14. Winston's Steakhouse
This restaurant is named after the late SFX wizard, Stan Winston, who brought the T-Rex and the other animatronic dinos to life in "Jurassic Park."
15. Running With Flares
Claire pulls an Ian Malcolm and pops a flare to lure the T-Rex out of its paddock -- just in time to chomp-punch the new Murder-saurus in town.
16. Welcome Back, T-Rex
The T-Rex from the first film is back, complete with scars left behind from her epic brawl with the raptors more than 20 years ago.
17. Vintage Merch
In addition to Claire's nephews stumbling on eBay-worthy gear, Lowery draws attention to his original Jurassic Park T-shirt.
18. John Hammond
The owner of the best cane ever gets a statue in his honor at Jurassic World, as well as The Hammond Creation Lab.
19. The Gyrosphere Attack
This sequence swaps out Lex and Tim trapped in a Ford Explorer for Zach and Grey pinned in a gyrosphere, complete with a shot where, like the T-Rex, the Indominous Rex tries to eat the kids by coming in through the roof.
20. T-Rex Still Loves His Goats
22 years later, the King of the Dinosaurs is still being baited with a white goat to entertain tourists. What, did they run out of "blood-sucking lawyers" on toilets?! *cymbal crash
21. "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" Banner
This banner somehow managed to survive Dino Thunderdome, but not kids Zach and Gray. When they find it in the Visitor Center, they set it on fire and use it as a torch. (Brats.)
