Joseph Gordon-Levitt & Co-Star Archie Yates Discuss ‘Wolfboy and the Everything Factory’
Gordon-Levitt also talks about how the show got started, and why he came on as executive producer.
‘Wolfboy and the Everything Factory’ is a new animated series on Apple TV+. Joseph Gordon-Levitt lends his voice to one of the characters in the series, and he also serves as the series’ executive producer. Gordon-Levitt and his co-star Archie Yates (who voices Sprout) recently spoke with Moviefone about the series.
Moviefone: Joseph, what was it that intrigued you enough to sign onto this project? And also as executive producer?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Well, this project began with an artist named Toff Mazery, who I've known for a long time since he joined HitRecord. And HitRecord is this community I started years ago. It's all about creativity and collaboration. And Toff was just such a brilliant artist in the community, such a great illustrator, and animator, and writer that I came to him and I said, "Okay, if you could do anything you wanted, what would you do?" And, what he came up with was ‘Wolfboy and the Everything Factory.’ So I've just been supporting him since then. And it's a dream come true getting it out there now for audiences to be able to watch.
MF: I just found it so delightful, the colors and the messages in it. Archie, what is a Sprite?
Archie Yates: So a Sprite is a worker of the Everything Factory. Which create everything that is known to exist on the surface. So the clouds, the sky, the trees, the grass, the life, everything. And all of them are really kooky with their own unique designs. And they're really cute.
MF: They are really cute. So what does Sprout look like? And what kind of Sprite is he?
Yates: Sprout is either a Forest or a Plant Sprite, I can never remember. It might be a Forest Sprite. And he is a short, adorable, little munchkin with a flower growing out of his head. And overall he's really sweet, and he always brings optimism to every situation that he's in.
MF: Joseph, who is Professor Luxcraft. And what is the Everything Factory?
Gordon-Levitt: So like Archie was saying, the Everything Factory is this magical place in the center of the Earth, where all natural things are created. Whether it's the trees, or your dreams, or laughs, or hiccups. They're all created by these magical creatures called Sprites. And Professor Luxcraft is sort of the grand mentor of all the young Sprites; who teaches them how to grow up and create all the things that they need to create. And teaches magic. And has a special focus on Wolfboy, who is quite an extraordinary young student.
MF: Wolfboy is human, we find out, but Professor Luxcraft allows him to stay at the Everything Factory and at The Academy, right? There's this training ground for the Sprites.
Gordon-Levitt: Yeah. The young Sprites are learning how to grow up and create all the things that they need to create. And yes, normally humans are not ever allowed in the Everything Factory. They don't know it exists. They can't see Sprites, but Wolfboy is this very extra special human. And you find out, out over the course of the story, more and more about what that means.
MF: And Archie, what is the friendship between Wolfboy and Sprout?
Yates: Usually, Sprout is a very friendly person and makes friends really fast. So as soon as the first episode is over, Sprout sees Wolfboy as a second best friend. Because they've already gone through this massive adventure together. And Sprout just likes everyone and everything that comes into his path. So it's really sweet. Yeah.
'Wolfboy and the Everything Factory' is now streaming on Apple TV+.
