Jared Leto gives of his most malevolent, intense and deadly vibe as the Joker in this new photo from the upcoming anti-superhero film "Suicide Squad."

Lest there be any doubt of where the Oscar-winning actor dwelt to find this evil, he tells Empire magazine -- which put the photo on its December cover -- that he had to go to some very dark places.

“There was definitely a period of … detachment. I took a pretty deep dive,” he says. “But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games.”

“Suicide Squad” hits theaters in August 2016.
