To inspire animators to create impressive dance numbers in “Hotel Transylvania 2,” director Genndy Tartakovsky knew exactly what to do—he performed some of the moves himself for his artists.
“Genndy, our director, loves to dance,” producer Michelle Murdocca tells Made in Hollywood, “so he works with our animators to come up with dances. They dance it out and the animators go for it.”
The filmmaker first did research online, she says, before he demonstrated to his team some of the wacky footwork he wanted to see in the animated film.
“Dancing is so visual, especially silly dancing—where you’re trying to do something funny and cool at the same time,” Tartakovsky explains. “It’s this nice combination where you can have the animators really able to express themselves.”
But to make sure a dance sequence is the right fit for the film, Tartakovsky says it helps to see how a group of viewers will react in order to know if he’s pulled it off.
“When somebody animates something, there’s a room of us watching it—especially something physical—and if everybody laughs, then we know it’s right,” he says.
“Hotel Transylvania 2” is in theaters now.
