'Harvey' Remake in the Works Again, This Time at Netflix
Netflix is hoping to pull a six-foot tall rabbit out of its hat.
The streaming service is developing a remake of "Harvey," the 1950 movie (based on Mary Chase's play of the same name) starring Jimmy Stewart. He played Elwood P. Dowd, an amiable but somewhat eccentric man with an imaginary, 6' bunny friend named Harvey. The performance netted Stewart an Oscar nomination.
Netflix is working on the project with Fábrica de Cine, the production company behind its upcoming Martin Scorsese/Robert De Niro mob film "The Irishman." Writers J. David Stem and David N. Weiss ("Shrek 2," "The Smurfs") are attached to pen the remake.
"Harvey" has been on the list of desirable remakes for some time. It's been adapted for television several times, most recently in 1996 with Harry Anderson.
In 2009, Steven Spielberg was circling a big-screen remake with Tom Hanks rumored for the role of Elwood.
