'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Concept Art Reveals New Character
Welcome to the galaxy, Mantis.
Director James Gunn released concept art from "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," and it gives fans a first glimpse at the new team lineup — and a new character.
Gunn shared the art on Facebook, and noted the presence of "Drax, baby Groot, Yondu, Star-Lord, Mantis, Rocket, Nebula, and Gamora." But wait, who's Mantis?
Mantis is a new character, played by Pom Klementieff, and in the art, is seen standing just to the right of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). And apparently, she's a bit socially-awkward. As producer Jonathan Schwartz told Entertainment Weekly, "She has never really experienced social interaction. Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from."
Yeah, that's putting it lightly. The mix of strange personalities among the Guardians is one of the reasons the first movie was so successful, so it'll be interesting to see how Mantis fits in.
One of those personalities will be different, though, as Schwartz revealed. Groot (Vin Diesel) isn't quite himself.
"He doesn't have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He's a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot," Schwartz teased. "The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that's sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?"
Groot question.
