'Game of Thrones': Conleth Hill Is Sick of That Varys Is a Merman Theory, So Chill
Listen, "Game of Thrones" fans usually have the best theories, but this "Varys is secretly a merman" thing is not one of them.
The theory has been around forever -- a post on Reddit, from four years ago, includes more than 30 points to support the argument -- but we're now in Season 7 and Conleth Hill is over being asked about it 17 times in a row.
Hill sort of brought up the idea himself in a recent talk with Insider, mentioning how some fans said he was "mermaiding around" with Olenna and the others while building supporters for Team Dany in Season 6. Insider picked up on the "mermaiding" quip, and asked if he's sick of people asking him if Varys is a merman. Here's his response:
"Yes. I don't get it. I really don't get it. I mean I'm not annoyed or anything, I think it's funny, but I really don't know where it comes from. I think someone got too stoned one night and came up with it.
I think, as in real life, in fiction if people don't know enough about someone they will either accept it or, if they're slightly less goodwilled, people will make things up. I think lots of things were made up about Varys by others in the books, and also by people in real life it seems. I don't know where the source of that is, where the beginning of that rumor came from, but it does make me laugh. [...]
When we did press for the premiere I got asked about that 17 times in a row and so by the end I was a bit impatient, but I think it's genuinely funny, but has no basis in truth. Wait and see and next season I'll be tutored by Patrick Duffy."
Patrick Duffy, as Insider noted, played a merman in the 1970s TV series "Man from Atlantis."
Insider joked that they wanted a random HBO blooper reel with someone giving Varys a merman costume, just to mess with people. Hill responded, "Yeah [the theory] started because they'd never seen my legs and I'm going 'What? What about my pointy shoes? You can't get a fishtail into that.'"
And we did see his legs in the far shot in Episode 3, "The Queen's Justice," crushing one more part of the wild theory.
Still, as GoT theories go, it's on the more amusing side, and it could certainly be worse. GoT Season 7 continues with Episode 4, "The Spoils of War," on Sunday, August 6 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
