First 'Mary, Queen of Scots' Photos: Saoirse Ronan & Margot Robbie Are Regally Ginger
Red alert: This movie already looks amazing.
Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan are competing against each other this awards season, in "I, Tonya" and "Lady Bird," respectively. After that, the actresses will bring their talents to a different kind of rivalry -- that of Queen of Scots Mary Stuart (Ronan) and Queen Elizabeth I (Robbie) in "Mary, Queen of Scots."
The historical drama -- written by "House of Cards" creator Beau Willimon and directed by theater director Josie Rourke -- opens November 2, 2018. The script is based on John Guy's biography, "My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots."
Entertainment Weekly shared the first look photos of the rival 16th Century cousins:
Saoirse Ronan's red-gold hair! It practically glows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Mary, Queen of Scots" follows Ronan's Mary, who was taken to France as a child and betrothed to King Henry II's eldest son, Francis. When Francis died just a year after being crowned king, Mary returned to Scotland in an attempt to regain favor with her cousin, England's Queen Elizabeth.
"Everyone manipulated their relationship," Robbie told EW. "It's complicated, it's tragic, and it's bizarre. The only other person in the world who could understand the position they were in was each other."
"Mary, Queen of Scots" -- costarring David Tennant, Jack Lowden, Martin Compston, Joe Alwyn, and Brendan Coyle -- arrives in theaters Nov. 2, 2018.
