The 'Fifty Shades Darker' Teaser Broke 'The Force Awakens' 24-Hour Views Record
The steamy new trailer for "Fifty Shades Darker" dropped earlier this week, and eager audiences ate it up, with the clip racking up an impressive 114 million hits in its first 24 hours online -- and setting a new record.
That huge total outpaces another long-awaited sequel's trailer, surpassing the 112 million views that the first full-length clip in promotion of "The Force Awakens" managed last fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Fifty Shades Darker"'s totals come courtesy of a combination of a multitude of streaming platforms, including views from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The promo performed particularly well on Facebook, where it garnered more than 2.5 million views on the social media site within its first hour of release on September 14. And it also did big business overseas, too, with the majority of its views coming from countries including the United Kingdom, France, and Mexico.
"Fifty Shades Darker" reunites stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, tackling the second book in author E.L. James's blockbuster series. James is returning as a producer, and her husband, Niall Leonard, is penning the screenplay. Whether or not that's a good idea is up for debate, but fans turned out in droves for "Fifty Shades of Grey," and based on the online reaction to "Darker" so far, it looks like the sequel won't have any trouble drawing moviegoers to theaters, either.
"Fifty Shades Darker" debuts on February 10, 2017.
