Fans Upset Sterling K. Brown's Emmys Speech Cut Short When Nicole Kidman Talked 'Forever'
"This Is Us" star Sterling K. Brown got to finish his Emmy Awards speech backstage, but fans were angry that he was cut off on the live show.
Sterling won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, as the first black actor to win the award since Andre Braugher in 1998. His speech referenced the previous winners from "Breaking Bad," "Mad Men," and "Homicide: Life on the Street," and he thanked his "This Is Us" co-stars before loud music started to play him off. He continued to speak on stage through the music, but the camera panned away and the sound was cut.
Fans thought the move was in poor taste, especially since they felt that Nicole Kidman was allowed to speak for much longer when she won for "Big Little Lies."
Kidman used part of her speech to talk about the HBO series shining a light on domestic abuse. Some fans argued that her time from name-call to exit was "only" 15 seconds longer than Brown's, he just took longer to get to the stage and start speaking, and Elisabeth Moss was the one whose (f-bombed) speech was kept to less than 2 minutes since it came at the end of long-running show.
But it was also seen as an A-list movie star like Kidman getting A-list special treatment.
#Emmys Sterling Brown cut off. Nicole was allowed to talk forever.????

Backstage, Sterling K. Brown told reporters how he would've finished his speech:
"I wanted to thank our writers. A show doesn't get seven acting nominations without some impeccable, beautiful, thoughtful writing. You guys are our life's blood. So I want to thank you so much. To our producers and our directors, in particular John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and the crazy cool Ken Olin, thank you for your guidance and friendship. And I want to thank Dan Fogelman. He is the Hebrew hammer with which our house is built. He makes me laugh and cry in equal parts, and keeps me coming back for more. In his own little, small special way, he's not trying to make America great again, he's trying to make it the best that it's ever been. I love him for taking me on this journey. I wanted to thank my manager of 17 years, Jennifer Wiley-Stockton. We've been doing this for a long time, and it feels like we're just getting started. I can't wait to see what's next. To my wife — they cut me off before I got to thank my wife. You're everything. You make my life worth living, and you gave me two of the most beautiful things that God has ever put on this planet, my sons... Daddy, loves you with the strength of a thousand suns. I'll see you Monday after work. Love you."
