Evangeline Lilly wants a movie led by the ladies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she's not sure her Hope van Dyne/The Wasp should actually lead the team.

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" has had a loooong staggered rollout around the world, so Lilly is still out there promoting the movie. She had a fun talk with PopBuzz about a potential "Avengers" movie led by the women of the MCU -- and she also suggested Wasp could've easily taken down Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War."

PopBuzz: "You spoke recently about wanting an all-female 'Avengers,' which is an awesome idea. Let's break that down. Let's get into that. So, are you leading that group?"

Evangeline Lilly: "Oh, I would love to. No, that's terrifying. I think... Well, it seems only natural Captain Marvel would lead? Because she is a general. And she’s the captain. And Captain America leads the other Avengers, right? So maybe Captain Marvel would lead."

PopBuzz: "You're going by rank."

Lilly: "I think so. I think I’m being a bit old-fashioned and maybe a little bit rigid about this. Because if it is an all-female Avengers film, then the sky’s the limit. We can reinvent the wheel, We don’t have to do anything that anyone’s ever done before. We can just make it all up and change the game. That's the fun of it."

PopBuzz: "And if that team faced off against Thanos, do you think it would've gone differently."

Lilly: "Yeah. Because I would've been on it. And it means I would've shrunk very small, I would've flown into Thanos' ear, punched a hole in his brain, and he would've fallen down dead."

Boom! But nah. Star-Lord would've messed it up somehow.

Of course, by "all-female" they never mean "ALL-female" any more than films like "The Magnificent Seven" (remake and original, and original inspiration) are billed as "ALL-male." They mean female-led, with some male supporting cast members -- like in the modern "Ghostbusters." That got called all-female even with a male villain and Chris Hemsworth as costars.

No one ever calls Westerns or male buddy cop movies "an all-male action movie" they just consider that "normal." But words matter, because anytime you say "all-female" people get their backs up about gender equality and ignore that they just mean "female-led with men in a few supporting roles, instead of the other way around which is what we still see *most of the time.*"

But Carol Danvers leading a team of Avengers? Yes, Captain.

 

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" seemed to set up some storylines for "Avengers 4," and also maybe "Captain Marvel." We'll meet Brie Larson's hero when her film arrives in March 2019, not quite two months before the next "Avengers" match-up.
