Watch Emilia Clarke's Adorably Awful Wookiee Impression
Emilia Clarke may play the Mother of Dragons on HBO's "Game of Thrones," but when it comes to the "Star Wars" universe, the actress just might be the Worst of the Wookiees.
Clarke, one of the stars of the upcoming spinoff flick "Solo: A Star Wars Story," stopped by "The Tonight Show" on Monday to promote the film, which reveals how the young Han (Alden Ehrenreich) meets Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), among other details about the space swashbuckler. According to the actress, Chewie does have dialogue in the official script, which is then translated into the character's signature grunts and yowls while cameras roll.
"Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon asked Clarke to give her best impression of a Chewbacca line reading, and the actress admitted she was "really bad" at imitating the wookiee. She did her best anyway, but as the actress put it, her attempt -- which to our ears sounds vaguely like someone trying to gargle mouthwash -- was "worse than I thought it was in my head."
"I was like, 'It's gonna be bad,' but that's terrible," the actress said of her mangled growl.
Fallon, trying to gracefully change the subject, then asked Clarke, "Who do you play in this film?"
"Not Chewie, clearly," she deadpanned.
Honestly, we'd kind of love to see an entire movie with Clarke playing Chewbacca, if only to see if her painful impression progressively improves, or just continues to devolve into awfulness. "Solo" director Ron Howard is already familiar with re-shooting things (not to mention remixing things), so it shouldn't be a problem. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
In the meantime, you can see Clarke play a non-wookiee when "Solo: A Star Wars Story" opens this Friday, May 25.
