Ellen Pompeo Jokes 'Grey's Anatomy' Fans Are Just Drinking Tequila, Not Watching Show
Reaching 300 episodes is no easy feat, but Ellen Pompeo knows the secret.
The titular "Grey's Anatomy" star recently appeared on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" to discuss the show's impressive success and recent milestone. Even she is shocked that the medical drama has been a hit for as long as it has, and she told the late-night host her hilarious theory on what keeps viewers watching: her character's favorite adult beverage.
"Maybe they're all drinking tequila and aren't really paying attention," she joked.
Of course, we know it's more than that, because there isn't enough tequila in the world to keep that many fans as attached as they've been for 14 seasons now. Instead, Pompeo pointed to how the show has changed.
"The evolution is part of why it sustains," she told Meyers.
Pompeo pointed to past instances where people were convinced it would peter out, like when Meredith's long-time love Derek (Patrick Dempsey) was killed off.
"They rushed in a new love interest like 30 seconds later," she said, quipping, "because I could never carry the show."
