Demi Moore is in shock after the death of a 21-year-old man in her backyard pool -- all while she was out apparently of the country.

One of the actress's assistants was holding a party at the Los Angeles house when the tragedy happened. L.A. County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral told the Associated Press that the young man, named by the AP as Edenilson Steven Valle, had been missing for about 10-15 minutes before his friends found him floating in the deep end of the pool. Police were called around 5 a.m. on Sunday and Valle was pronounced dead. Law enforcement sources told TMZ the victim seemed to slip and fall into the pool. His family and friends reportedly told authorities he didn't know how to swim.

Demi and her family were not around when this happened, but she reacted to the death in a statement (via TheWrap):

I am in absolute shock. I was out of the country traveling to meet my daughters for a birthday celebration when I got the devastating news. The loss of a child is an unthinkable tragedy and my heart goes out to this young man's family and friends. I ask that you please respect the privacy of all concerned during this sensitive time."

What a horrible shock for his family -- 21 and he's gone. Scary that it can happen that fast. Stay safe out there, everybody.
