Damon Lindelof is "remixing" the beloved comic "Watchmen" for HBO. He just posted an impassioned five-page letter to fans, warning of his intentions -- which he knows will upset some people -- while emphasizing how much of a "Watchmen" fan he himself has been since he was 12.

Lindelof's Instagram post shows his "Lost" roots by including some flashbacks to share his own "Watchmen" origin story. He reveals his father gave him the first issues when he was 12, and takes us through his father's reaction to changes and adaptations over the years, while detouring to explore the two previous times Lindelof had been offered the chance to adapt the project for television.

All told, it's a work-up to his explanation of why he chose to adapt -- or remix -- the comic for HBO. He explains that this rendition will not be a sequel, but it will feature some "new faces," and a modern time period, switching out 1980s Reagan and Thatcher and replacing them with Trump, May, and Putin.

Here's a small portion of the letter:

"We have no desire to 'adapt' the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.

They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we'd be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.

To be clear. Watchmen is canon.

Just the way Mr. Moore wrote it, the way Mr. Gibbons drew it and the way the brilliant john Higgins colored it.

But we are not making a 'sequel' either. This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built ... but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary."

He added that the series' "tone will be fresh and nasty and electric and absurd."

Lindelof had posted his Day One photo back in September 2017, just as HBO gave a green light to a pilot, and ordered backup scripts.

Zack Snyder directed a film version of "Watchmen" in 2009, starring Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Patrick Wilson, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, and Matt Frewer.

HBO has yet to reveal a premiere date for Lindelof's "Watchmen" remix.
